Its NOT a diet!! http://workoutroutines.biz/blog/2010/02/18/its-not-a-diet/ http://workoutroutines.biz/blog/2010/02/18/its-not-a-diet/#comments Thu, 18 Feb 2010 20:13:42 +0000 Administrator http://workoutroutines.biz/blog/?p=179 I was listening to the radio this morning after I’d delivered my 6 kids to their 4 different schools, and the dj was talking about her friend who had said she was “on a diet”. The woman was saying “Oh girl, I feel for you! Been there, done that!”

That little exchange got me thinking about how we view healthy eating. Its like a vacation from “regular” eating, or unhealthy lifelong patterns, and not a true lifestyle shift, as it needs to be. Our country is in a bad way regarding obesity. Its at an all time high, and according the Center of Disease Control, more than 200 million Americans are obese or overweight!

And though “drop 20 lbs in 6 days” diets are making millions of dollars, still obesity rates continue to soar. Something’s wrong with how we eat, and WHAT we eat as a nation.

But if we get it our of our heads that eating healthy isnt a short term thing we’ve been calling a “diet” for years, but rather a shift in how we eat. How we eat individually and as a nation has brought us to the place of unhealth that has caused us to be sick and unhealthy and inactive. So when you purchase one of our programs, take full advantage of the nutrition plan that comes with it! :)

Then one by one, we’ll change the trends of obesity; starting with YOU and ME. :)

She said “Traci, I’ve always loved fitness, but my weakness is ice cream; I have it every night. Well, I finally decided that I was going to do a round of Turbo Jam and take out the ice cream. In 3 weeks I’ve lost 9 lbs and 2 inches in my waist alone JUST by eliminating ice cream!!” It SEEMS like it would be a no brainer, but how many times do you allow yourself to eat or drink something just because you feel you “earned it” by working out? I’ll bet if you were really honest with yourself, the answer would be “DAILY” or at least “WEEKLY”.

This friend is now experiencing people asking her “WHAT ARE YOU DOING???” everywhere she goes! And now THEY are wanting to do Turbo Jam too because they’ve seen the results that she’s getting.

Well, I’m excited to tell you that you too can take a good honest look at whats snuck into YOUR diet and make some simple changes. Maybe you are a 9pm kitchen “grazer”. :) Maybe you are hooked on chocolate and need your “fix” daily. You arent alone, but you CAN overcome those old, bad habits. I’m not saying you dont get to ever have them again, but has your “treat” become more common, thus making it no longer a treat but a part of your daily menu?

One of his seminars is called “Form and Function” where he shows proper form and answers all sorts of questions (many having to do with YOGAX ;) ). A common theme that we’ve noticed among women is the frustration at “not being able” to do a push up.

One of the most empowering moments is when women get called up on stage and Tony shows them a variety of ways to do a push up, as they increase their strength at whatever point they are at in their fitness journey. Time and time again, women experience a push up for the very first time under the watchful eye of Tony Horton – what a great memory! :)

A common struggle for people in push ups has to do with wrist issues. Tony’s been a trainer for over 25 years, and after training celebrities, pro ball players, and the average person like you and me, he found a real need for a sturdy push up stand that really gives the wrist a break (figuratively, not literally ;) ) and puts the pressure on the muscles to do the work, not unnecessary strain on the wrists! I have something in my head that tells me that a workout short of at least 30 minutes doesn’t really “count”. But the truth is, if I only have 10 minutes, isnt going all out for 10 minutes far better than sitting and worrying, wringing my hands, eating something I shouldn’t, or something else that is contrary to feeling better? YOU BET IT IS!

Is it Day 12? Day 20? Remember, programs like Power90 and Slim in 6 are not 2 week programs for a reason! Maybe it took you YEARS to get into the unhealthy state you’re in. Give your body the necessary time it needs to get it to a state of optimal health and well being. That takes TIME. That takes CONSISTENCY. That takes YOU NOT GIVING UP!

Truth be told, 6 weeks or 90 days are going to pass anyway. Why not MAKE THEM COUNT?!?!

Keep looking at that dreaded BEFORE picture! The only thing that stands between you and your awesome AFTER picture is time, consistency, and stickin to it!

As a mom and as a trainer, it has always been my goal to talk with my girls about the HEALTH value of eating well and working out; not just to be skinny. In this time where their friends are missing meals and then binging on bad foods when the hunger so overtakes them, my girls are living outside the box, bringing their healthy lunches and snacks to school. Do they feel weird and totally conspicuous? Absolutely! Does it do a bit of a number on their self esteem to seemingly be the only girls eating in their crowd of friends? You bet. But you know what else I’ve learned in my 17 years of parenting? Kids learn far more from what we as parents do than what we say. And if our words and actions line up; ALL THE BETTER!!

My 15 year old is on her 19th day of Power90. Not because I told her to, but because for years she’s seen her dad and I do our workouts daily and faithfully, sometimes grumbling all the way leading up to it (keepin it real ;) ) and she just instinctively knows that that’s what you do when you get older. We cant ever ask our kids to do something faithfully even when they dont want to, if they’ve never seen us buckle down and fight our way through the hard stuff.

A healthy perspective on eating and taking care of our bodies - its one of the greatest gifts we can give our kids. :)

My day typically starts out at 5:30am and ends at about 10:30pm. A full day of taking care of a lot of things – mostly all good things – but that take up TIME, nonetheless. I often hear from people that they’re concerned they don’t have enough time in the day to fit a WORKOUT into their day. That’s the beauty of the 10 Minute Trainer program.

While you may not have a full 45 minutes in a row to schedule the time to workout; odds are you have three to four 10 minute segments in your day to squeeze in a workout! Your health is worth it, and now you have no more excuses not to make exercise a part of your every day!
